Wild Scott H. Biram Interview in LA

Whoa!

Something about the antics and musical attack of Herr Biram inspires some good writing and provides some far out interview material.

Check out this interview in the LA Record as Scott talks about how much metal he's got in his body from all his accidents, locking himself in a Port-a-Potty while on mushrooms, and taking acting classes and figgering out how not to freak out around people.  It's a great read.

From the intro: "Scott H. Biram is an American hollerer with a bunch of room to himself between David Allan Coe and Jack Oblivian. He likes Black Flag but sometimes he gets weird and reedy like Dock Boggs, and he decides here that he is probably not going to take shrooms again for a little bit."

Kick Ass Scott H. Biram Live Review, Wherein a journalist eats his words!

We just love it when a music writer goes to a show with a pre-conceived notion of somebody and proceeds to have his mind blown AND he or she fesses up to it!

Check out this conversion experience of a writer in Phoenix at a recent Scott H Biram show.

Scott talks about his "special" way of playing Led Zeppelin covers.  NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!  Shield the eyes of children.  Read it HERE.

Bloodshot Digest: The "I'm So Pissed FOX Cancelled Dollhouse" Edition:

  • No Depression has been hard-at-work digitizing its back issues for the web. This week, they featured Scott H Biram's cover story from a few years back -- fans new to Scott's work can read about the horrific car crash Biram survived, and recovered from, with determination and humor.
  • Speaking of surviving, we're happy to report SYGC continues to heal from their van accident. We're told that Mark's now able to take walks, and should be able to go home soon. There's another benefit show for the band tomorrow night at the venue, and our just-announced holiday show at The Double Door will also aid the band. Gapers Block has the rundown here.

As some of us get ready to run out the door and head to Boston for our 15th Anniversary Shindig at the Middle East, here are some nifty goings on:

  • Andre Williams recently recorded a new album for us in the Motor City with Matt Smith (Outrageous Cherry, Volebeats, Nathanial Mayer) at the controls.  Sitting in with them was Motown guitar legend Dennis Coffey.  Read about Dennis and the recording in the Detroit Metro Times here.
  • Scott H. Biram played the Off Broadway in St Louis earlier in the month, and Lo-Fi STL was there to capture it on video.  Check Scott out in all his feral glory here
  • Wayne Hancock submitted himself to some vigorous questioning by our buddies at PopMatters.com. Want to know what movie makes Wayne cry?  His favorite albums?  Can he rap?  Looky here for answers.
  • The Chicago/Hideout Party is shaping up with the addition of the Drunken Spelling Bee and Belt Sander Races.  Also, we are so happy to have a reunion show by Moonshine Willy. Here's an interview with singer/guitarist Kim Docter on the Beechwood Reporter

Now, time to get some fresh scallops....

See you this week in Boston, and next week in Philly.  Where should I go for cheesesteaks and lobster rolls?

Bloodshot Digest August 21st, 2009

The Death Panel Edition:  We here at Bloodshot are all for the Death Panels, as long as we get to do the picking.  That only seems fair.

  • It's been a busy BUSY week in our steamy little hive as we gear up to take the 15th Anniversary caravan up Madison and Minneapolis way, a weekend of cheese curds and Replacements covers.  Look out!  JP will be tweeting and googling and gurgling and whatnot from Madison all day, so check for updates on this sold out party.  In Minneapolis, Scott will be sending up to the minute teletypes on our shiny new Faxtrola.
  • Scott H. Biram stopped by the studios of KDHX in St Louis for some interview action and played some songs.  Some enterprising young radio cuss had the good sense to film some of it.  Here's Scott playing Sinkin' Down from his recent album.
  • Zach, one of our steadfast, well-mannered and only moderately delusional interns was in Louisville last week with his band and found himself in a late night tattoo parlor (hey, these things happen), and well, let's let him tell the rest:

"There is this tattoo shop in Louisville that was awesome enough to re-open their shop at 12:00am after the show to hook up a couple of the kids on tour with me with some rad ink. We happened to be in Louisville the same exact night as Scott H. Biram, so as my friend Matt was getting all tatted up, this guy, wasted off his ass, stumbles into the shop and just starts raving about Biram and how awesome the show was. He happened to be a friend of the guy giving the tattoos, so he walks into the room where he's working, pulls out a boombox, puts the new Biram disc in, throws the stereo on the very table my friend is getting his tattoo on, and continues to drunkenly hover over the tattoo artist, blaring "Still Drunk, Still Crazy, Still Blue" while the tattoo artist continues to place ink on my friend that will be there for the rest of his life!"

The mysterious powers of Scott H. Biram: heed them well, my friends.

  • Rob's Recommendation of the Week: The movie The Cove. Not an easy watch, to be sure, but riveting, sometimes funny, sometimes gory and truly heroic; a brilliantly conceived call to action.  Not cloying or hyperbolic.  The guilty hang themselves.  The villians plainly evident.   A refreshingly Michael Moore-free style of documentary.  Flipper WILL get his revenge.

We'll see you next week.

we remain,

Bloodshot

[Insert Clever Headline Here]

  • AMERICA! What's wrong with you?  Exclaim Magazine, the Rolling Stone of Canada recently declared Scott H. Biram's new disc "Album of the Month!"  Yer not gonna lie around and let THEM be cooler than US, are you?  Get down with the Biram sound, people.  I mean, really.
  • Minneapolis and Madison  Anniversary Beer-B-Q lineups finalized.  Those of you in the Upper Midwest (or those of you willing to travel there) have more to celebrate than the ripening lingonberries and waterslides in the Dells.  Our Anniversary festivals in your fair cities are all booked and confirmed and they are, I must say, a couple of killer lineups.  More cities to follow.  Get the updates here.
  • Michael Jackson is still dead
  • Rob's Recommendation of the Week: Balyeat's Restaurant in Van Wert OH.  While driving back to Chicago from our Pittsburgh Beer-B-Q last weekend, I eschewed the grimness of the Ohio Turnpike and took US 30, the Lincoln Highway, instead.  After gassing up on the outskirts of this town near the OH/IN border I noticed a faded billboard with the words "homemade" and "pie" in consecutive order.  I was sold.  I'm easy that way.  I drove the 1/2 mile to town and there it was, next to the courthouse.  Serving since 1923 or so.  Excellentness #1:  When the waitress asked me if I was ready for supper, I said I hadn't seen a menu.  Her reply: "Oh honey, it's Sunday, we don't have menus" and listed my choices.  I opted for stewed chicken with homemade noodles over mash(ed potoatoes).  Excellentness #2:  It came with soup or salad, I  said salad.  Her reply: "tossed, potato or JELLO."  Oh, baby.  It was all very, VERY good.  Excellentness #3:  There were about 12 or 14 pie choices on the counter.  I went for Butterscotch Creme and almost sobbed with joy when I ate it.  Excellentness #4: The whole shootin' match cost me about 8 bucks.  SO, the next time you're on the road between Fort Wayne and Toledo (and who DOESN'T make that drive all the time?) stop in.   RUNNER UP:  Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh.  In an effort to streamline the lives of their patrons, they put the french fries IN the sandwich.  Lord, have mercy.

Thanks for tuning in and let us know where we need to eat during our upcoming travels.

Bloodshot Digest 6-19-09

As we in Chicago continue to build our Ark and sweep the rising tide of frogs out the front door, we bid you WELCOME to the Friday digest.  Lots of fun things to look at and read about, so QUIT WORKING for a second.

  • Ha Ha Tonka had a high-quality live shoot at the fabulous Off Broadway in St Louis on May 6th as part of the Born Small Town Tour kick-off party. Take a peep.
  • Here's a fantastic piece on Scott H. Biram from the Austin Decider, it's got an interview and embedded links to videos and live performances.  Read about his whiskey benders and all the metal in his legs.
  • Tired of rooting around the Interweb for all those CLASSIC Robbie Fulks songs? Our buddies (and fans) over at Glorious Noise put together a sampler to make life easier and boost your productivity. So, here's a BRAINLESS way to get a whole mess of Fulks tunes in one spot. Then you'll want more, and you'll want to legally support one of the best songwriters and performers to ever call Chicago home.
  • Rob's Recommendation of the Week: The movie Up! Look, I hate popular culture more than any of you, so when something makes billions of dollars at the box office, i can usually safely assume it's pureed mush for the masses, but this is art. If you are not weepy and amazed at the depth of feeling and the economy of story telling in the first 10 minute segment, you have a heart of tar.  AND i haven't gut laughed that often at a movie in months. AND it's in 3D.  See it. Check your hipper-than-thou baggage at the door and soak in a great movie.

Ok, back to filling sandbags.
